How zakat works
- Pick your zakat date — the same Islamic date each year.
- Add up zakatable wealth on that date: cash, bank balances, gold, silver, shares and funds at market value, money owed to you.
- Subtract debts that are due immediately.
- Compare to nisab. At or above Rs 366,970 today → zakat is due on the whole amount, not just the excess.
- Pay 2.5%.
Rulings on shares held for dividends vs trading differ between schools — confirm with a scholar.
Nisab & zakat questions
What is nisab? +
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold, for one lunar year, before zakat becomes obligatory. It is defined in silver (52.5 tola, about 612.36 grams) or gold (7.5 tola, about 87.48 grams). Most scholars advise using the lower silver threshold so that zakat reaches more people.
How is the nisab in PKR calculated? +
Multiply the silver weight (612.36 g) by today's silver price per gram in rupees. Equivest converts the international silver price (USD per troy ounce) to PKR per gram using the current USD/PKR rate: 67.19 USD/oz × 277.43 PKR/USD ÷ 31.1035 g/oz = Rs 599.27 per gram, giving Rs 366,970 as of 23 Sep 2026.
Do I pay zakat on shares? +
Yes, if your total zakatable wealth — cash, gold, silver, receivables and investments — is at or above nisab. Shares held for trading are generally valued at market price on your zakat date; shares held for dividends are treated by many scholars on the underlying zakatable assets of the company. Rulings differ, so confirm the method with a scholar you trust.
What rate is zakat? +
Zakat is 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth (above nisab) that you have held for one lunar year. It is calculated once a year on the same Islamic date, after deducting immediate debts due.

This is a calculator, not a fatwa. Equivest issues no religious ruling. The figure above applies one common method — the silver nisab, which most contemporary scholars prefer because it makes more people liable — and rulings differ between schools of thought, particularly on shares held for dividends rather than for trading. Confirm the method with a scholar you trust, or with your masjid's own published nisab, before you pay.
