PSX indices and what each one tells you

There are 11+ PSX indices. Equivest groups them into three families so you can see where capital is actually moving on any given day.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange publishes more than ten indices. Most apps only show KSE-100 and stop. That hides the most interesting question: is everything moving together today, or is the index masking a sector rotation underneath?

Equivest groups every PSX index into three families and shows them side by side.

Family 1: Benchmarks

The general-purpose measures of “the Pakistani equity market.”

  • KSE-100 — the flagship. Top 100 PSX equities by free-float market cap. When the news says “the market”, they almost always mean this.
  • KSE-30 — top 30 by free-float. More liquid, blue-chip-only. Lower noise, but narrower.
  • KSE All-Share — every single PSX-listed equity. The broadest possible measure.

Family 2: Shariah

Indices that mirror the benchmark family but exclude non-Shariah-compliant names per AAOIFI methodology.

  • KMI-30 — top 30 Shariah-compliant equities. The Halal investor’s blue-chip benchmark.
  • KMI All-Share — every Shariah-compliant PSX equity.

These pair naturally with Equivest’s Halal-only filter and the curated 🌙 Shariah-Compliant PSX pie.

Family 3: Sectors

Where the daily story actually lives. Equivest ships six sector indices:

  • Cement — construction + housing demand. Highly cyclical.
  • Banking — net interest margins move with policy rate. Big-5 commercial dominance.
  • Oil & Gas — E&P + refining + downstream. FX-sensitive earnings.
  • Fertilizer — concentrated oligopoly. Urea + DAP names.
  • Power — IPP capacity payments + circular-debt overhang.
  • Tech & IT — software exporters. SBP IT-export incentives matter.

When the KSE-100 is flat but Cement is up 2% and Banking is down 1%, capital is rotating — a flat headline number hides that. The sector breakout shows it directly.

How Equivest computes index moves

For sector and Shariah indices, change-% is the unweighted average move of the index members for the day. So when you tap into Markets and stocks update, every derived index moves with them in real-time.

Benchmark levels are the exchange’s own, read daily: KSE-100, KSE-30, KMI-30, the All-Share and the rest of the family each have their own page on this site with history, returns by period and constituents.

Where to find them

  • Home — horizontal “PSX INDEX FAMILY” rail with KSE-100, KSE-30, KMI-30, and the 3 most-moved sectors today.
  • Settings → MARKETS → PSX index family — the full hub, grouped by family.

What you can do with the breakout

Three habits we’ve found useful:

  1. Read the headline before opening anything. If KSE-100 is +1% but Cement is -2%, your DGKC position isn’t doing what the headline implies. Open Cement first.
  2. Track KMI-30 vs KSE-100. When KMI outperforms, halal investors are winning. When KSE-100 outperforms KMI, banks and insurance are leading.
  3. Sector-rotate. If Tech & IT is up 3 days running while Banking is flat, the market is rewarding growth over yield.
